USA vs Mexico

2006 Copa Wadsworth The best Yet! What a fantastic turnout for the Copa Wadsworth an annual match between the US and Mexico in Mexico City. Under the guidance and captaincy of the US team Eoin O'Neill and Andre Maur brought 29 strong players down to Mexico city. Unfortunately for the US the Mexican team gave them a good old fashion whooping 35-3 with Andre Maur,Guy Cowan and Ken Stilmann the only winners for the US.

The match of the tournament was between US captain Andre Maur and Marco Mendes which went to five games after Maur going 2-0 up before Mendez came back to 2 all. The fifth was a hitchcock as Maur raced to a 7-3 lead only for Mendez to come back and have 14 -11 match ball. At 8000 feet above sea level Mendez looked the favourite with long gruelling rallies but Maur hung in to get the next 3 points to equal the score at 14 all with some perfect boasts and drops. It was tie break time and Maur indicated to Mendez for one, but it was Mendez choice as he went for went for 3. Mendez went 15-14 up then 16-15 up and Maur came back to 16 all only to clinch to a 17-16 victory on a stroke which the Mexican referee gave to the US team. After 80min Maur was exhausted and was ready for a few quiet ones at the reception that saturday night. George Wadsworth who the tournament is named after was so proud of the turnout and looks forward to having a great event next year at the San Francisco Olympic Club. Ken Stillman did a great job appointing Eoin and Andre as US captains they both showed how proud they were to be captains of the US team in fact they were a touch of class. Ken Stillman should be thanked for doing a great job and also made a very memorable speech on the Saturday night. The Mexican team were great hosts and and in fact went out of their way to make us feel at home except for the altitude (ah the altitude) I wonder did that effect the result or maybe the Mexican team was just too good. The Saturday night dinner was great fun and we even got the new Zealand hacker dance from Ray Lindsay and an Irish ballad from Eoin O'Neill.

Hardball doubles Mike Joint and Andre Maur against Mexico #1 seeds. Mexico won 3-1 in a cracking final going all in tie breaks in 90min
